Not much interest in a Kage Baker ficathon, then? Actually, I know there's some interest out there, but I'm not sufficiently hooked into fandom to really gauge interest, I think. Anyway, I'll file it under "maybe someday" and leave it at that, and perhaps see if I can get any story ideas of my own. I'm into a reread of the later books in the Company series, and remembering that I had objections to how Mendoza got portrayed, and with some of the plotting. And mysteriously, I don't have a copy of the very last book, so I'll have to go acquire it. I know I had it at some point, and I can't imagine where it's gotten off to.

Here, have a fashion photo of slinky 1930s types. Dian and her smug-druggler, perhaps?

I'm sure the gentleman offered to count them for her to check.

Can I ask a slightly off-topic question? Can you recommend any *fun* American novels from the 30s? I've been trying to think of some (research for a new project), and while I LOVE 30s screwball movies, all the American novels I'm thinking of from the time period are MASSIVELY depressing (Grapes of Wrath, etc). So it occurred to me to ask you...

No worries if you can't think of any either, I just thought I'd give it a try. Thanks!

Hmm, let me think about it. All the ones that first spring to mind for me are depressing!

Amazingly enough, I've never read any Kage Baker. Got a suggestion where I ought to start?

There are probably a couple of places you could. The first two books in her big immortal cyborg-time travel series are both pretty decent entry points. The first one is In the Garden of Iden, and introduces Mendoza and Joseph, both primary characters in the subsequent books. It's a very character-driven story, set in the turmoil before Elizabeth I takes the throne. The second book, Sky Coyote, is more story driven, with Joseph a the central character (Mendoza is there, though, and I think you meet Lewis briefly), and is set in California, among a Native tribe called the Chumash. You'll be spoiled for some of the stuff that happens with Mendoza in the first book, however.

She also has a ton of short stories, some of which have been collected - Black Projects, White Knights, Gods and Pawns. I think I posted a link to one online a few entries ago. They're also good ways to get an idea of her writing style.

And finally, she's also written some fantasy, where a good place to start would be the book The Anvil of the World.

I'd love to know what you think after you get the chance to read some of her stuff!

I think it's really tragic that people don't just lounge around in evening clothes anymore.
