Snuck out to see the 9pm showing of Thor at a nearby theater - 2D, because I don't hold with that 3D shit.

I know nothing about the comic canon, and I'm happy to keep it that way, but I really, really enjoyed the movie. I liked Natalie Portman, doing a nice and warm turn as a slightly nerdy scientist (and I'm glad they didn't overplay that by giving her giant thick glasses and having her trip over things) totally gobsmacked at the fine piece of dude that's almost literally fallen in her lap. I loved her gang of comrades and how they were just as supportive as his gang of comrades, except with less weaponry. The fight scenes were well-paced and were shot well. And, unlike so many comic book movies (with the first Iron Man being my favorite exception), Branagh let character moments have some breathing room instead of shoehorning them in on the way to the next big shiny boom moment. So, yay. I'd definitely see it again.

On reconsideration, one of my favourite scenes in the movie was the one where the two scientists and the amusingly whiny sidekick sat on the roof bewailing the loss of their research (and AWS's iPod.) They were totally self-centred, and totally immersed in the disaster that had befallen something they really cared about. I LOVED that they got to be real people with real agendas.

I'm planning to see it again as well. I thought it was big fun and very well made!

That was adorable. Absolutely adorable. I've heard some people fussing about Jane's character and I don't really get it.

I liked it too!

I'm sure it's been 48 years since I read a Thor comic, and I like what was done with the characters. I do wish that Frigga had gotten in a couple more hits with the sword before they disarmed her, though, damn it! It would also have been nice if Sith had the literally-golden hair of legend, but I guess they thought it would have detracted from Thor's blondness.

I felt Branagh's hand all over this film, and all to the good! It was fun.

I don't if I felt Branagh all over it (cue jokes about wanting to feel Branagh all over) but he certainly is interested in the funky angles :g:

Yes! Exactly! Just what you said! That is it precisely. I really liked Jane the not-over-the-top scientist, and I thought the pacing of the movie was sort of effortlessly good. So YES.

What was even better is that I didn't expect to like the movie so much - I've seen people griping about Jane being insufficiently "kick-ass," and I don't get it at all.

Good lord, really? She's not there to kick ass, she's there to science. I think it's really great to have a lead female character who's not all "kick-ass", but is still a really interesting and strong character. I liked her. I felt like I could so easily go for a beer with her. And I think the idea that girls have to be some limited definition of "kick-ass" in order to be awesome is counterproductive.

...sorry to get my rant on a little here - I know it's not your terminology, I'm just a little flummoxed.

The impression I got was that she wasn't running around like a mini-Buffy, and that she was either too "stereotypically girly" or perhaps too gaga for Thor too quickly (which...did you see his arms? And the divoty things above the hips that I get all weak for?) and therefore was Not A Good Female Character. And then I see the movie and she's so endearing, and having fun with her little posse and dragging them out in research vehicles into the middle of the desert, and I loved all of them so hard. She's not the same woman as Pepper Potts, who is cool, calm, and professional under fire, and she doesn't have to be, she's fine as she is.

YES THIS. Your final line there, FUCK YES. And all the rest. (And especially this: And the divoty things above the hips that I get all weak for? YES RATHER.)

I'm not saying there weren't moments when I went, "hrrm," about the relationship development/dynamic, but the movie actually always answered my burgeoning issues. For instance, I was sort of, "hmm, this is a little one-way" when she had helped him break into the compound and whatnot. But then he stole her journal back. I mean, he promised to, and it's not much, but his entire world has just been shaken down around his ears, and he remembered to grab something important to her. And I was sold.

And sure, I wonder if she leapt a little too hard at the end, but this is something pretty amazing that she's been swept up in, and I don't think it's in any way infeasible for her to have been swept along by it. Later, she may be more rational about it. (And "she searches for you" is a hilariously romanticised way of saying, "she is continuing the research she was already engaged in when you fell out of the sky", Heimdall, you big softie.)

I never could relate to Buffy.

Ahahaha, I didn't really make this connection, but it's totally true. And now she has SHIELD funding her!
