Finally got around to seeing the most recent of the Pride and Prejudice movies. I hadn't been aching to see it, partly due to my abiding love for the miniseries, and partly because none of the reviews I heard of it were raves, exactly.
At any rate, I have to say that it didn't work too well for me. Concentrating all the action into two hours was agonizing, especially since I was used to the more leisurely pace that the miniseries was obviously going to take. What ended up happening was an overdose of Mrs. Bennett, causing me to cringe in my chair uncomfortably and agree with Darcy that having her as a mother-in-law would just about be insupportable. And while I like Kiera Knightly just fine, I wasn't really thrilled with whoever played Darcy - I didn't find him particularly handsome nor did he seem to have any oomph. He was just...there. Again, part of this may be the result of cramming such a lot of action into such a small space, because you didn't get the slow buildup between the two leads.
So, I'm glad I've finally seen it, but I'm not going to ever have to see it again.
Also got to see Music and Lyrics, which was charming and fabulous. I think romantic comedies work for me when there's a real plot underneath the love story. If this had been a movie about a musician struggling to get back his former glory, and his relationship with a new lyricist, it would have worked as a story even if they didn't make a cute couple. Add to it all a script that doesn't patronize anybody, and genuine sparkage between the two leads, and you've got a winner.
Plus, the songs all end up sticking in my head.
