Current and recent reads

Just finished a reread of Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides, which is a fantastic tale of pirates, magic, zombie sailors, mad philosophers, and Blackbeard. Many of the details, although not the plot, link up pretty well with the Pirates of the Carribean world, enough so that I wonder if one of the screenwriters may have read it - although perhaps the tropes are general enough that both sources got there from different directions. Powers' magic is a lot less benign, and his ghosts are a whole lot scarier than anything you see in PotC. (And the only reason I compare the two is so that PotC lovers looking for a taste of something similar know to go get the book and enjoy it!)
I also just finished a reread of Robin McKinley's Sunshine, for no reason than I picked up a nicer used copy to replace my battered ARC. I think the ARC will make its way into the box of books I have for Cher's classroom library, which I'm hoping to finish filling and send off to her very soon.
Also just picked up Special Topics in Caqlamity Physics by Marisha Pessl, and although I've only read the first chapter or so, it's sucked me in.
