Look, ma, I'm in the paper
Oct. 26th, 2004 02:17 pmA photo of me at work recently appeared in a very tiny local paper. Natch, they managed to spell my first and last names incorrectly, as well as making numerous mistakes, inaccuracies, and outright "huh?" statements all throughout the article. It's times like this when I wonder how much that I read in the paper is just downright incorrect. Hopefully, the Washington Post is more accurate than the Podunk Times, and the writers for the front page are more concerned about accuracy than the writers for the little blurb in the Out and About section are, but things like this still make you wonder how much in the paper that you can take as truth.
I'm pondering an entry on museum work and the difference between ideals and reality. This is spurred by the recent visit of a Museum Studies class to our museum, and the ensuing discussion. In a nutshell, there are few careers where the conflict between ideals and reality is fought and refought on almost a daily basis. We do good. We know we do good. But how and when and why we do it is frequently a startling story to people who haven't gotten their feet wet in the field yet.
