Scent memory
Jul. 8th, 2010 11:26 amI have been thinking about smells and the memories they invoke. My sister recently gave me an orange-scented car air freshener (a pirate robot) that I hung in the car recently. The scent faded very quickly, and the only time you really smell it now is when the car has been closed up for a while in warm temperatures. The faint smell of the air freshener, combined with the heat and the initial blast of air when you turn on a car's air conditioner, sends me back to Manila, in the backseat of one of my grandfather's cars, which were always faintly scented by a masculine sort of cologne. I don't know why the scent was there, as there weren't any air fresheners in the car itself - perhaps it was what the cologne the driver wore, or something used to clean the seats or the dashboard. But it sends me right back into my childhood, leaving behind the heat of the afternoon to climb into a car with lightly tinted windows, holding my schoolbag and maybe a blue bag of Chiz Curls that I bought at the school canteen.
