The surging tides of nostalgia
Jul. 17th, 2009 02:59 pmBemo and I are in Virginia, staying at my mom's house while we frantically try to keep up with our vacation, which is whizzing past at light speed. It looked like a nice long trip when we planned it, but in the manner of all vacations, has proven to be far too short to do everything we want to do. Nonetheless, we're having a good, if slightly frazzled time. Things are mostly the same - a year and a half isn't really long enough for the whole place to look completely different - but we have definitely discovered a few startling new developments that we have to ask tons of questions about.
Spent yesterday back at my old workplace, where I was warmly welcomed (seriously a lovely feeling to have) and where I yapped with all my old co-workers and got a tour of the new-to-me storage location, plus got to hear all the good gossip. I miss the place very much - not only were my co-workers wonderful to work with, but I actually miss the collection, which I didn't expect. The woman in my old job is very nice, and it was good to meet her in person since I have only exchanged a few emails with her. In a way, the whole thing really felt like a homecoming.
I'd love to write something profound here about nostalgia and personal relationships, but it's all a tangle in my head and I've been tracing the strands but to no real resolution.
One thing we have definitely not missed is the frickin' traffic. Oh, and the fact that it takes forever to get from point A to B, partly because of said traffic. We have truly been spoiled, what with our fancypants getting to where we need to go in under ten minutes selves.
It's very good to get to spend time with my sister. It's not just good, it's important to me. Oh, and I have met the Irishman! He does indeed seem to be a very nice gent, and my mom is more comfortable with him than I've ever seen her with another person. He's inside her life now, and whether or not they do end up getting married, I think he's been good for her.
Hubert The Tiny Netbook has performed marvelously. I'm typing this on him now. He is a valiant small thing and I'm glad to have him.
