sienamystic: (dresses and older men)
I tried to watch The Affair of the Necklace last night and just couldn't get through it. I knew it hadn't had stellar reviews, but I was going into it for the pretty dresses and for Simon Baker looking swoonable (I'd seen a few stills beforehand) but Hilary Swank was just miscast and whoever wrote the script had their pencil set to Stilted High-Falutin' Talk. I don't mind Hilary Swank, but she does not belong in a period piece of any type before, oh, say 1960 because frilly girly dresses don't really suit her and she doesn't seem to be able to handle the dialogue very well. On the other hand, even Simon Baker was struggling with the stiltedness of it all. So I watched, and then fast-forwarded, and then finally turned it off and packed it back up in the Netflix envelope to go back today.

And then I watched Labyrinth for the eighty-millionth time and then watched the making-of documentary that I hadn't actually seen before and which was really interesting. I laughed when Jim Henson said they were looking for a rock star to play their goblin king and he ticked off "...Michael Jackson, Sting, David Bowie..." because although Sting might have been a good fit for the part (he's got the face for it), trying to imagine Michael Jackson in the role just made my world go TILT for a second because I cannot force my brain to speculate how that might have looked. "Wouldn't have worked" is about all I can muster.

Next up on the Netflix queue is the documentary Gonzo for Bemo (and for me, but mostly for him) and the first season of Upstairs, Downstairs, which is another one of those Things I Should Probably Have Watched Earlier but never actually managed to. I'm in a weird space with my Netflix right now - all the things currently in my queue don't seem to have much appeal, so I added a few things. But I almost deleted everything and started over again.
