The Bemo is currently towards the end of a long-term temp contract with the Department of Labor, processing unemployment claims and answering questions about existing claims. As the end of the contract gets closer, we've obviously been uneasy since what with the surgery bills about to rain down on us, plus the fact that one of his student loans is close to defaulting if we can't pay something in the range of $450/month to them, we've been wondering what our financial picture is going to look like for the next few months. His current job is a good one, pays well, is near mine so we commute together, and is currently helping us hold body and soul together. They'll keep him on at his job if he's needed, which loosely translates to, "If the big car manufacturing plant shuts down, you get to keep your job a while longer."

Bemo's continued employment rests very heavily on whether or not a whole bunch of other people in the state are laid off. And that just plain sucks.

In lighter news, my mom phoned me this morning from the St. Patrick's Day Parade. In Dublin. Which she was watching from the roof of the Guinness Plant. She's going to have a brogue by the time she gets back, or perhaps she'll have turned into a leprechaun. My sister reports that she's using Irish expressions. I suspect her fondness for the Guinness plant comes from the fact that her father was involved in the business of beer, although I don't know if you can get farther away from San Miguel Beer than Guinness.

She's also been to buy Waterford crystal, which is another strange story. Apparently the plant has officially closed, and they're trying to sell naming rights to an overseas company that will manufacture crystal under the Waterford name, but the employees have taken over the building. And she was able to buy crystal from "the employees' store." By which she may mean a store that previously only employees were able to shop from, or perhaps they've started their own store to sell the backlog of crystal. Anyway, she's gotten eight tumblers and is very pleased with them.
