OMG PONIES
Jun. 28th, 2008 01:16 pmTo use a term my sister says when she's excited - because I'm excited! On the heels of our tag sale triumph, we decided to go to the university's surplus auction, which occurs every few months or so. I've been hunting for a few things, so we actually went there hoping to find specific items and not just random crap, although hey! Random crap always acceptable, if it's the right crap.
We left with a wooden swivel chair to go with my 1930s-era desk, which I've been hunting for quite some time. The one I really wanted went to a guy who wasn't going to let me outbid him, so I surrendered and chose one of the other three that were left - and got it for six dollars. I also bought an old GE fan, which is something I've also been looking for - I think I have visions of an office that looks like one Sam Spade would be comfortable in. I then picked up a nice oak stool for the kitchen, and I think this will be my trial run piece for refinishing - I want to take some very fine grain sandpaper to it and then paint or restain it, because it's not in great condition (although it's sturdy and only a trifle bit wobbly) so I won't feel bad destroying something great if I completely mess it up.
Last - and perhaps my best purchase - were two chairs from the mid-sixties. They're an absolutely hysterical rusty orange tweed (that I'll have to keep the cats from clawing, although it's so tempting) with an almost unnoticable purple stripe through them. They don't match anything in the house - except maybe Bemo's new stereo console - but they're in great condition, and they are seriously some of the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat down in. I was only gunning for one, and when the auctioneer decided they should go as a pair my heart sank - and then I turned out to be the only bidder and got both for five dollars. FIVE DOLLARS.
Looks like my plan to add zing to the Mystic household is working like gangbusters! I am utterly squeeful!
