With original tubes!
Jun. 27th, 2008 03:14 pmA few people at my workplace collect vintage/antique furniture, particularly my boss, who loves 50s- and 60s-era lamps and lighting fixtures. So yesterday the other co-worker who collects similar things tells her about a tag sale at a house near his where the house was put on the market, sold quickly, and now they are trying to get rid of most of the furnishings. He had apparently just nabbed a pair of Danish Modern chairs for $25 bucks apiece, and encouraged her to go see if there was anything she liked.
On the grounds that I'm trying to introduce more whimsy and zing to our very bland apartment, I convinced Bemo to drive us over after work so we could take a look as well.
There was quite a lot of fun stuff - and I nearly succumbed to the siren song of a Schlitz Beer pitcher - but it was when we went downstairs that Bemo's eyes grew wide. Playing in the corner was a stereo console similar to this one, although not quite as nice. It was priced at twenty bucks, and we kept circling back to it and debating. Then one of the tag sale ladies came downstairs and saw us, and offered it to us for ten bucks! Bemo reached into his pocket - and indeed the only cash he had on him was a crisp new ten dollar bill, so we surrendered to fate and took it home.
It was heavy because of all the original tubes, but we got it settled without too many problems. It was also dusty beyond belief, so we cleaned it up (I'm praying there's no mold) and it's now sitting in our computer room where it's not exactly being shown to distinction but will be in the future. The only hitch is that somewhere along the way - either when we were moving it or when we were dusting it - a wire got loose, and Bemo will have to play with it to get it back in working order again. And the turntable doesn't work, but we knew that.
It's a very handsome thing, and I welcome it to the family!
