Are Roombas worth it? Or would my gift card be better spent on a more traditional vaccum, or perhaps a carpet steamer-thingy?

The Roomba calls me seductively. But that may be mostly because I can picture, with great glee, how much it would upset the cats.

omfg dude, you MUST get one, if only because _I_ want one so VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH.

also Roombas scaring cats, never not-awesome.

I want one too, but I think I'll wait until I have someplace that's mostly hardwood floors (and then I'll send the butler out to buy one *g*). I think it's not going to work to move the mountain of cat hair that is my apartment.

I actually dated someone who owned not one, but two. And judging by his carpet, it would probably be better to get a regular vaccuum. Even he admitted that it didn't really deep clean--more just surface crud. I'd go with regular. But then, I am a practical gal senza cats.

I think this may be why I hesitated - it's fun, and I'd probably be entertained for hours on end, but what I really need is for the cat hair embedded in the carpet to be removed!

I have a Roomba, and it is magical, but I have mostly hardwood floors and tile. It does a great job on them, and a decent job on carpet, but I keep a regular vacuum on hand for when I need to do the occasional deep clean. If you can get a good deal on one, I say go for it, but don't expect it to do everything for you.

I have long-standing vacuum issues. We've got an elderly Dirt Devil that gets by, but isn't exactly a powerhouse, and when we moved my mom gave me one of her two pricy vacuums - that my husband promptly tripped over and broke. I haven't gotten it to a store to see if it's fixable or not. But with this gift card, I could treat myself to a new, sleeker, sexier vacuum! I think the Roomba, while potentially very fun, is probably not what I need most - it's all about the cat hair in this place.
