Looks like Ishmael is the frontrunning name - ironic since my last betta fish was named Ahab. Avast!
I borrowed a book from one of the curators at work that he was given for our library. It's from 1910, and is titled Fighting the Traffic In Young Girls Or: War on the White Slave Trade. The cover has the quote from a "Gen. Booth" that simply says, "For God's Sake Do Something!" and has an illustration of a lovely young miss, hands clasped to her breast and looking appealingly towards the heavens, captioned "My God! If I only could get out of here." It also has the words "The Greatest Crime in the World's History" across the bottom.
Inside, just after a photo of the author Hon. Edwin W. Sims (The man most feared by all white slave traders), we see an illustration of a young miss in an ice cream parlor, being chatted up by a smarmy-looking man in a bowler hat. The caption reads "The First Step. Ice cream parlors of the city and fruit stores combines, largely run by foreigners, are the places where scores of girls have taken their first step downward. Does her mother know the character of the place and the man she is with?"
This proves to be a very interesting read.
