I'm with you on being fascinated about the world it's set in, and I find that a lot more interesting than the mystery, sort of.
I also feel like the supporting cast is baffling - not the hosts (who you get a reasonable sense of, considering the number), but I spent a lot of the book going "I don't even know how many people are at this thing" and "I have no real sense of the size of the house" and feeling rather lost in time and space in ways that the hosts were not.
