Sadly I think part of the problem with tourists is how thoughtless they tend to be. And with Venice, I think it's important to stay over a few days and not just show up like the cruise ship tours, who tromp to the three sights that they're most familiar with, have their photo taken, and then get back on the boat. A little effort to get off the route that goes from the train station to San Marco and back really pays off. We were able to do it a little bit, just not as much as we should have. We stayed in the old Jewish Ghetto (where the term originated) and despite being literally two turns off the main path, things were amazingly quiet.
I hope you go someday. I want to see your photos from the Galapagos! (I'm of the understanding that they do manage their tourists a lot more strictly so as to have less impact; I hope that's true.)
