It was hard figuring out what we wanted to do today, beyond sit on the couch and watch endless repeats of "How The States Got Their Shapes," which is an excellent program but not one we need to devote our holiday to. Frankly, I was getting a little wound up, because Bemo was just as eager to get out of the house, but couldn't help me figure out what we should do - I was getting a lot of, "I don't know," and "yeah, maybe" to the few things I could think to suggest. I dragged us out to Target to pick up charcoal and other barbeque tools, and despite a mini-breakdown of tears, we ended up going to a nearby park that surrounds a lake. I had thought about buying one of the little grills, and I think we will eventually as they're very inexpensive, but for today we just used used one of the freebee barbeque grills there.

We cooked up some turkey burgers and hot dogs, and ate more than I would have thought possible. I dropped a hot dog on the ground and tossed it into the bushes, thinking a crow or maybe, later in the evening, a fox or raccoon would stop by for it. Instead, a platoon of grackles came and fought over it, doing battle with a blue jay who eventually took the whole thing up to the picnic shelter roof. He wasn't able to keep it there, though, and eventually it rolled off the roof, much to the delight of the grackles. We also looked up and saw this little inhabitant:

swallow

A swallow, a beautiful little bird that I've never really managed to see up-close and not in motion.

When we got home, there was a guy sitting in a patio chair across the street, tossing firecrackers with grim determination, like he hated every second of it but was obligated to continue. Very strange.
