The usefulness of having resources
Jul. 31st, 2008 11:39 amThanks to the Giant University Library, I have now watched Metropolis and Marnie/ For tonight, I have The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit and for later, I have The Thin Man and assorted other Hitchcocks that came in the same bundle as Marnie.
I really enjoyed both movies. Neither me nor the Bemo are very familiar with Hitchcock - he's one of those "must-see" directors that sort of slipped past both of us. Marnie was really interesting, and the title character was fascinating, but I don't think they let us in on Mark (Sean Connery) and his motivations well enough. Bemo thought for most of the first hour that Mark was running his own con and was using Marnie to get there, and when it turned out not to be the case he was rather let down. It was also interesting to see all the comparisons to Marnie that January Jones is getting for her role in Mad Men - I've seen several comments to the effect of her physical resemblance to several Hitchcock blondes, with Marnie being the best candidate for her emotional state.
Metropolis was weird and super-stylized and interesting, although more of a struggle in parts to get through. The most iconic bits of the film (the robot, the city backdrop) that were so inspiring to other directors don't actually make up much of the movie. It was also hard not to giggle throughout the "erotic dancing" segment, where the poor girl looks like she's convulsing. But I'm glad we watched it, and parts of it were entirely beautiful in a very strange way.
