Just finished reading Soon I Shall Be Invincible and really enjoyed it. It was a good take on a lot of issues good comics pick up on, as well as movies like The Incredibles. And for most of the book, every time Doctor Impossible spoke, I heard him as The Monarch from the Venture Brothers, which made for amusement.
Bemo and I also went to see the second Hellboy movie yesterday. I knew going in that the visuals were going to be pretty great, and they didn't disappoint at all - many of them, like the Tooth Fairies and Johann and the Angel of Death, were really stunning and/or entertaining. I don't think Del Toro has figured out how to let emotional resonance build in these movies, though, or how to toggle back and forth between various emotional pitches, because sometimes we were getting hit over the head with dialog and music cues in place of actual acting. Plus, I think he tried to pack in one too many Big Ideas that either needed a little more time to breathe, or should have been cut out already. On the whole, though, we had a really good time, and I want to visit the Troll Market very much please.
