Got my six imps, plus one bonus, and tested two of them today.

The freebee was Death On A Pale Horse. The description says, "The End of All Things: empty white musk and mint seeped with solemn lavender, doleful patchouli and vetiver, scythe-sharp yuzu and lime, with geranium bourbon, white sandalwood and calla lily."

First of all, I really dislike patchouli. I sniffed the imp and knew for certain that this one wasn't for me, but it's got a strong masculine vibe so I made Bemo put it on. It's sort of an odd combination of herbs and dirt, but not in a way I liked at all. It was almost a bitter sort of smell, and rather off-putting. Bemo said he "kinda" liked it, but not enough to keep it, so I think I'll end up passing it along to somebody else to try. At a guess, it's definitely a scent that'll work better on a guy.

The second scent I tried today was Manila, which I bought because I was born there and was interested in the scent notes they included. " tropical, humid, lush scent, with a faint echo of Pacific breezes, jungle blossoms, and deep wet woods. Sampaguita blossoms, banana leaf, palm, and narra."

A ton of reviews on the BPAL site said that the banana note was the first thing that leaped out at them - in some cases, it was the only thing they got from it. Interestingly, for me the banana note is the most subdued on my skin. What I most get out of Manila is a spicy scent. (The narra, I'm guessing? I have two bedside tables made out of that wood, but I never noticed a smell from them.) For me, Manila doesn't read as tropical or banana-ish, but rather a little bit like incense, but in a way that doesn't bother me at all as most incense scents usually do. The floral note of the sampaguita faded after about an hour, and never seemed as sweet as I remember sampaguitas smelling. I'll probably keep it (or send it to Bec) and I do like it well enough, but it's not going to be one of my absolute favorite blends.
