Thoughts of summers
Jun. 8th, 2005 09:16 amEvery year, when the weather starts getting warmer, I find myself experiencing deja-vu almost every day. I'm not sure what causes it - have most of my big experiences been in the summertime? Is it the heat? I know that part of it comes from my two trips to Italy, both of which went from May to July. In a city as full of fountains and classical motifs as Washington, D.C. is, I think I end up seeing a bit of building out of the corner of my eye that reminds me of something in Rome, or Todi, or Perugia. But other times, I can't place what sort of memory that my body is being reminded of, just that it was. It's only for about as long as a heartbeat, when my body goes, "Oh, wait - we've done this already," and then it's past. Something in particular about summer mornings, when the air is still cool but you can feel the heat waiting to pounce on you as the day grows older, triggers it most frequently. It's not Emily Byrd Starr's "flash" by any means - that was more ecstacy than deja-vu - but it makes me very happy, just like "the flash" did for her.
In a different way, I'm always startled when autumn comes around and I'm not preparing to go back to school, and buying notebooks. And I get a three year cyclical itch to move, which is a remanent of my childhood as a State Dept. brat.
Are there any times of year when for you, memories come flooding back more strongly? What kind of things trigger your moments of deja-vu?
