Hunger Games

Yes, I have joined the bandwagon. Well, to clarify, I read the first book today. Tore through it, actually. It was brilliantly paced and very compelling, and the plain, straight-ahead prose was much to its credit. It's a little pocket rocket of a book, and I was happy being dragged along for the ride.

I don't know that I was avoiding the whole Hunger Games thing, exactly, just not sure if I wanted to read the books, but the movie looked interesting and, in all honestly, this heartbreaking and raw and awesome and horrible and beautiful Iron Man/Hunger Games fic by [livejournal.com profile] quigonejinn probably tipped me over the line. A coworker passed along her copy and I read it mostly over lunch, and will probably drag along the Bemo tomorrow to see the movie.

Oh, and the book also emits some sort of signaling beacon. I was chatted up by a bunch of people who saw me reading it over lunch and wanted to share how much they liked it as well. That didn't seem to happen during the Harry Potter boom, so I'm not sure if people are just more open about being fans of "kid books" or what, but I definitely heard from a few people who wanted to tell me all about how much they loved it and hoped I'd fall for it just as hard.

I'm in the middle of Mockingjay now - I love it when a series grabs hold of me and makes me plant my nose in the books for hours. Hasn't happened for a while.

It is really well structured - I love the pacing, and how much I was pulled into Katniss' POV. The world building is so solid.

*sighs with satisfaction*

Just saw the movie today. Pretty good, I thought.
I'm holding off on the next two books for now, but I'm sure I'll pick them up at the library soon. The internet being what it is, I'm pretty spoiled, but they should still be worth it.

I just really like Katness as a protagonist. She's suspicious, and hard, and scarred in a very realistic way.

Oh, the Hunger Games!

I have had so many bizarre conversations about them, and not just when I worked at the book store. My sister recently started reading them, and asked me if I liked them, and I was all "...no? I don't think you really like the Hunger Games. It's kind of like getting punched in the stomach. A lot."

ETA: I should also say that I read all three of them in 24 hours. So yes, pacing.

It's true, you can get involved, or sucked into, or riveted by the books, but based on the first one (haven't gotten to the next two yet), "like" is not quite the right word for it. I'm not normally a reader of the dystopian kind of stuff, but I'm glad I read it.

My sister is a little more sensitive to violence than I am (oddly, I can stomach it on tv or in a book, but really dark comic books affect me like crazy...no Hellblazer for me). I think the first book kicked off a few nightmares for her, and no wonder.
