You can do Italy, then hop over to Spain -- not that far away, by plane! Italy is hairy as it´s in maximum alert, with good reason. Spain was hit already so, alas, it´s got some reprieve til it´s its turn again. Skip Madrid (much as I love my hometown it´s not as wonderful as Toledo, Sevilla, Granada, Salamanca, Santiago or Ávila - or Málaga). And don´t go there in August, trust me, unless you have Sahara sand instead of blood in your veins. We natives are hardly used to its summers!

Depends on what kind of tourism you want - nature trekking? (Scotland, Ireland and Iceland, hands-down) or culture? (Italy, Italy, and France, France, and France). Gastronomical? France. And Belgium!

Alas, it's doubtful that we have enough funds to do both Italy and Spain, as ideal as it would be. In fact, this whole trip is more tentative than I'd like, due to both money and vacation time for my husband (the United States being far more stingy in the matter of vacation time than just about anywhere else in the world). If we do go to Spain, I think we'd stick to Sevilla and that region (and see if my mother is correct about the statue of an ancestress in a Malaga square). We'd also be going in January, so I wouldn't have to worry about enduring the heat, which I loathe!

The tourism was going to mostly be of the "linger and loiter and eat cheaply but reasonably well and look at museums and churches" kind. Italy is my heart's joy, but Spain has many attractions as well, since my mother's family hails from there, I've always wanted to see the Alhambra since I was a child, I love flamenco dancing, and eating tapas is always a plus. And it would be a slightly cheaper trip. But right now this is all blue-sky speculating, for the fun of it.

You´re part Spanish? Olé, a landswoman :) The Alhambra and all of Granada are worth at least four days, ditto Sevilla, ditto Córdoba. Jaén, Huelva and Almería you can safely skip. Cádiz is gorgeous but any Costa de la Luz small city like Sanlúcar de Barrameda will give you a similarly lovely impression about the whole coast. I hope you get to go soon, it sounds like a wonderful plan.

There's no reason why I couldn't live with Mr. and Mrs. Patriotic and the little Patrioticlets, because they're not going to be on me to be home ALL THE TIME. I'll be around enough and do chores and such, but I won't feel constrained to be there.

If you have a copy of TKAM lying around, I would be much appreciative.
