Off to the faire

The local Ren Faire was today - the one here is held at a local vineyard, and is mostly done up by the local SCAdians. Entry was a dollar, so Bemo and I decided it would be a great opportunity to get out into the nice weather (although it was bordering on too hot for me - the sun is more intense out here since there's not much cover and I may need to invest in a parasol). We knew that we've been spoiled as far as Ren Faires go - the Maryland one is one of the best in the country, and it's been our local faire for years now (the Virginia one being erratic and the Pennsylvania one being a little too far), so we went in expecting something small and indeed it was - but very pleasant. The vineyards were very pretty, and it was nice chatting with the various folk hanging around demoing heavy weapons fighting, spinning, basketmaking, and OMG SQUEE BIRDS OF PREY. A husband and wife pair from Council Bluffs were there with their four birds (a harris hawk, a peregrine, a kestrel, and a red tail) and we spent a long time chatting with them. Ever since imprinting on My Side of the Mountain as a kid, I've been fascinated by the whole topic. How does one get into falconry, anyway? It's not exactly a sport you can pick up casually!
Man, I was certified to fight with heavy weapons ages ago. But SCA stuff just requires so much time, and if you can't make your own stuff (like I couldn't make my own armor) it can get so spendy. I miss it.
Bemo's tooth is still hurting him, and he has more visits yet till the root canal process is done with. Poor baby. His band played out last night, and he was worried that he wouldn't feel well for the show, but he rallied and had a great time.
