I mentioned to Bemo the other day that the next thing I'd want after my own house was real furniture to put in it. I got an eyeroll back, but I'm dead serious - I don't mind not having a lot of stuff, but I am starting to really crave better quality things in my life. Ok, that's a lie, sort of - I've always had champagne tastes and a beer budget, so the whole "starting to" thing isn't quite right. I mean, on my first trip to Italy on a newly-married student budget, I ended up buying a really pretty little mirror with handpainted tiles. as well as a gorgeous and eerie Venetian marrionette because in my mind's eye, I could see how they would fit in with the interior space of a house I wanted to have someday. They've been forced to languish on Ikea bookshelves and in the halls of shabby apartments, and truthfully, they'll never be tiny focal points in the magazine spread Architectural Digest does on the Mystic household. Poor things.

A problem I'll no doubt have with this whole furniture thing is that I have magpie tendencies when it comes to picking style. I like a great many interior styles, and I've never really had the chance to experiment with some to see if "like" translates to "live with." In fact, I probably will end up attempting to fuse my own style together out of a whole hodgepodge of things, with my goal towards "attractive, non-pretentious, comfortable."

Plus, I also have problems trusting myself when it comes to buying quality - I can be prone to the very evil (and probably very American) thought that price is a good indication, so what I do is dither about whether or not the price is a good price for a good piece of furniture, and then I end up buying something crappy because then at least I know what I'm getting. This is probably because I've been around so many people who have good eyes for craftsmanship, authenticity, and quality, but I haven't really been able to pick up those traits for myself, or at least I don't think I have.

Do you think your home has a style? How did you come to it? Was it carefully planned out or did it just happen? Would you change it if you had tons of money to do so, or are you pretty happy with how it worked out?
